WASHINGTON -- A murder suspect being pursued by police pulled a gun and shot himself in southeast Washington, just blocks from the funeral for the woman he's suspected of killing.

Allan Haggins, 38, was wanted in the murder of Goldean Hawkins. She was found stabbed to death near her home on May 31.

Haggins shot himself a few blocks from St. Matthew's Church, where the funeral for Hawkins was taking place.

Police spotted the suspect in the 500 block of M Street Southeast just after 11 a.m. Monday and he fled to a parking lot in the 600 block of L Street SE. Haggins produced a handgun in the parking lot, police said, prompting two officers to fire their handguns at the suspect, striking his body. Haggins then shot himself, police said.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
