About 24,000 wreaths from Maine will be placed on graves at Arlington National Cemetery for the holidays next week.

The arrangements are on their way from Maine to Virginia. About 2,000 people turned out in Portland on Sunday to welcome a shipment of those wreaths before they head south.

A Maine-based nonprofit group called Wreaths Across America is sponsoring the convoy. It is carrying more than 200,000 remembrance wreaths bound for 500 veterans cemeteries across the county and 24 overseas locations.

Wreaths are scheduled to be laid on soldiers' graves at Arlington Dec. 11.

The Portland Press Herald reported city police officer Kevin Haley is planning to lead about 75 police officers, firefighters and volunteers who will lay those wreaths on the graves of fallen soldiers.
