Cyclist Hit by SUV Dies

Green Party candidate hit Sunday

Natasha Pettigrew, an area law student and Green Party candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maryland, has died of injuries suffered in an accident, according to her mother.

Pettigrew was riding her bike near Prince George’s Community College in Largo at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday when an SUV struck her.

The driver didn’t stop. She drove three miles to her Upper Marlboro home thinking she’d hit a dog or a deer, she later told police. Once she was home she realized Pettigrew’s bike was still stuck under her vehicle.

The driver then called police immediately, so they are not calling the accident a hit-and-run, said Maryland State Police Lt. Mark Darby.

The crash team and investigative unit will determine whether any charges are necessary.
