High Speed, Stolen Motorcycle End in Fatal Accident

Anne Arundel County police said it appears excessive speed contributed to a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV Saturday evening.

Police were called to Route 198 and Race Track Road in Laurel, Md., for reports of an accident. The incident occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m.

Investigators said two motorcycles were traveling west on Route 198 at a high rate of speed toward the entrance of the Laurel Race Track. As the motorcycles approached the intersection, an Isuzu Rodeo was making a left hand turn onto Race Track Road.

One of the motorcycles struck the side of the Isuzu and threw the rider, a 17-year old male. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Isuzu, Ira Tracy Matthews, 53, of Laurel, was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He is listed in serious, but stable, condition.

The second motorcycle fled the scene without stopping. The motorcycle involved in the crash was reportedly stolen in Howard County.

CORRECTION: A previous version of the story named the stolen motorcycle's owner as the deceased, which was incorrect. We apologize for the error.
