A high school student was shot and wounded as she waited for a bus Saturday night in Southeast D.C., less than a mile from where another young woman was killed at a bus stop last year.
The 18-year-old woman was standing on the 2400 block of Alabama Avenue SE about 11:30 p.m. Saturday when she heard several shots, a family member told News4. One of the bullets that sent people diving for cover tore through the student's forearm.
The shooting strikes a chord for many residents; community reporter Charnice Milton was shot and killed in May 2015 as she waited for a bus less than a mile to the northeast. Milton was 27.
Milton's father, Ken McClenton, said he was troubled to hear that another bystander had fallen victim to violence.
"People have accepted the fact that if you get killed over here -- in Southeast Washington, D.C., Northeast, wards 7 and 8 -- that's just the way things are," he said.
The student shot on Saturday is recovering and was back in class on Monday, her family said.
