Someone broke into the offices of Habitat ReStore in Federick County Maryland on Dec. 11, stealing a safe, cash, computers and tools from the organization, which serves as a building materials recycling and retail center. The non-profit, located on North Market Street, learned that sometimes the negative actions perpetrated by some can have positive consequences for others. Store manager Dean Jacoby's initial reaction was disbelief: "This is a habitat, for gosh's sakes and we're here to help people and it was real disheartening."

It wasn't long, Jacoby says, before he saw the first act of reciprocal kindess at a volunteer luncheon the next day.

"I said I'm gonna have to cut this short and leave because I have to go back to the store to put it back together, says Jacoby. "And it was really neat to see those people get up from the table and follow me back to the store to help me put the store back together."

Jacoby says folks have come in off the street to donate, others have called to offer support. One local security company even offered to donate a security system. Jacoby says the outpouring of generosity built the store staff's spirits back up.

"Kind of hits you in the heart pretty good when something like this happens, but the outpouring support of the people in Frederick has been real heartwarming," says Jacoby.Ron Cramer, executive director of the non profit, says the agency has recovered what was stolen, and probably more.

Those who want to donate or volunteer can visit the Frederick Habitat website or contact them at 301-662-2988.
