Gunfire Erupts During Brawl in Frederick

Fight involved 15-20 people, both men and women

Gunfire erupted during a large fight in downtown Frederick, with one man suffering a serious cut or stab wound, authorities said.

Between 15 and 20 people -- both men and women -- brawled during the afternoon rush hour Monday. Police are still interviewing witnesses to determine how the fight got started.

The fight began on the street near the Westerleigh Apartments and moved down about half a block toward W. South and Degrange streets, said Lt. Clark Pennington, a Frederick County police spokesman.

The group scattered after the shots were fired, he said, which was when police began receiving calls.

After arriving at the scene, officers saw a vehicle speeding away from 5th and Bentz streets. They pulled over the car and and found a passenger suffering from a laceration or stab wound on his side.

The victim was flown to Baltimore Shock Trauma, where he was in serious but stable condition.
