Gray Tours City Center Site

One of East Coast's largest construction projects

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray toured one of the biggest construction projects on the East Coast Thursday.

The 10-acre City Center project on the site of the old convention center covers almost five blocks. It will mix office space, housing and retail.

The building will begin opening in just over a year, officials said.

Gray visited the site with officials from Qatar, who are financing about a third of the $2 billion project

“This is a very complicated project,” Gray said. “But it also once again demonstrates how desirable the District of Columbia is at this stage. We're growing by a thousand people a month in terms of population. And when developers and investors look at this they see great opportunity.”

Almost 4,000 permanent jobs will be created by the City Center project.
