Prince William County is set to build its 12th high school to accommodate a growing number of students, but the project has discovered a graveyard that predates the Civil War.
Schools spokesman Phil Kavits tells WTOP Radio that remains were discovered in the course of surveying the property in Manassas. The graveyard has about 13 burial plots.
Kavits says the school system will work with state officials to determine how to move forward. The county will work with state archaeologists to move the remains to a commercial cemetery if no family members come forward and if there are no objections.
The school construction project is set to begin next spring. The graveyard is located where the school's football stadium would be. The school is scheduled to open in 2016.
