Driverless Google Car Rides Around DC

Google test drives its self-driving car in Washington

Google test drove its driverless car in D.C. Thursday.

Ward 3 Council member Mary Cheh went along for the ride in the self-driven modified Toyota Prius. She said Google told her the car could be ready to use in urban environments in two years.

Google said the car relies on video cameras, radar sensors, lasers and a database of information collected from manually driven cars to help navigate through traffic.

The car has had one crash -- while it was being driven by a human.

The car holds up to three people, and a person can take control by stepping on the brake or turning the wheel.

The car got its first license to operate in Nevada this month.
