Armed Man Confronts Good Samaritans, Strikes 1 With Car, Police Say

Two people were injured early Saturday morning after an apparent suicide attempt evolved into an attack on three good Samaritans, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

D.C. police were called to Pennsylvania Avenue and Anacostia Freeway around 6 a.m. over a report of an assault "with a dangerous weapon." When the first officer arrived, he found one man on the ground with serious injuries and a woman who apparently attempted suicide by jumping from a bridge.

According to the police report, a witness told the officer that he saw the woman fall from the Anacostia Freeway bridge. The witness said he and two other men ran to help her on the ground below.

The witness said when they tried to help the woman, another man attempted to fight them off, telling the three men “to get away from his girl and she was going with him,” according to the report.

The man then pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and the three good Samaritans pounced on him to seize the firearm. During the struggle, one of the witnesses was able to grab the gun and hit the man with it, causing a shot to fire. No one was struck by the gunshot.

The report said the man got in his car and drove off. Moments later, he returned and struck one of the good Samaritans with his car, seriously injuring him, and fled the scene.

The woman and the man hit by the car were taken to Prince George’s Hospital Center. The report does not list any names for the woman, the good Samaritans or the man who fled the scene.
