Gas Prices Continue Summer Slide

At lowest level since February

Just a couple months ago, analysts were saying you could be paying as much as $5 a gallon to fill up for your summer road trip.

Instead, prices are headed in the opposite direction and are expected to drop throughout the week.

AAA says prices are at their lowest level since February, and are 17 cents lower than prices at the same time last year. As of Monday morning, the national average for a gallon of regular sits at $3.50.

Prices in D.C. actually went up a penny from the weekend, to $3.58 a gallon. Maryland drivers are paying $3.40 a gallon. Virginia still has the lowest prices around, at $3.27 a gallon. West Virginia drivers saw prices drop a penny overnight to $3.57.

Analysts say the economic instability that drove prices up over the early spring is still around, but the ample availability of crude oil has helped to keep prices down and falling.
