GW Professor Files Complaint Over Catholic Single-Sex Dorms

A George Washington University law professor has filed a complaint against Catholic University president John Garvey over his plan to make the school's dorms single-sex.

Professor John Banzhaf's complaint, filed with the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights, says that eliminating mixed-gender dormitories constitutes illegal sex discrimination under the D.C. Human Rights Act.

Garvey published a piece in the Wall Street Journal in June saying that returning to single-sex dorms would reduce binge drinking and “hooking up.” Incoming freshmen will be the first to be affected by the change. Catholic University said in a statement that it is confident that the law does not require that men and women live together in residence halls.

The majority of complaints filed with the Office of Human Rights are resolved through mediation.
