A fundraiser has been planned to support the family of a 10-year-old girl who was shot and killed steps away from her own home.
On Monday evening, Makiyah Wilson was fatally shot in Northeast D.C. while making a trip to the ice cream truck.
The community has gathered around the family, building a memorial of balloons, flowers, stuffed animals and warm messages in the spot where she was killed. On Saturday, dozens stood in pouring rain, holding candles in Wilson's honor.
Another fundraiser is planned for Sunday between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., according to a widely-shared post on Instagram. The event will be held at the Pure Lounge near U and 14th Streets NW.
A number of artists are set to perform. Admission costs $10.
Wilson had recently completed fourth grade and was enjoying her summer break, her grandmother said.
About 8 p.m. Monday, four men jumped out of a car in the 300 block of 53rd Street NE and opened fire in all directions. Wilson was fatally struck. Four other people, including the girl's 18-year-old sister, were shot and wounded.
