Fundraiser to Be Held for Rookie DC Firefighter Hit by Firetruck, Badly Injured

A group of firefighters will hold a breakfast fundraiser Wednesday to raise money for a rookie D.C. firefighter who was badly injured after he was struck by a firetruck on the scene of a blaze.

Dane Smothers Jr. was preparing hose lines and other equipment at the scene of a large rowhouse fire on F Street, Northeast, when he was struck late last Wednesday night by a ladder truck arriving at the scene, fire officials said.

Smothers remains in intensive care.

On Wednesday, a motorcycle group of firefighters will hold a breakfast fundraiser to help with his medical costs. They're asking for $20 donations.

The event will be held at the Tune Inn (331 Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast) from 8 a.m. to noon.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help with medical expenses.
