Son of Former State Sen. Edd Houck Kills Self on I-95 After Fatal Shooting at Motel: Authorities

A Virginia man killed himself on Interstate 95 after fatally shooting another man and abducting his own estranged wife from a motel, authorities said.

The suspect is 36-year-old Todd T. Houck, the son of former state Sen. Edd Houck, authorities said.

On Tuesday morning, authorities say Houck killed his estranged wife's boyfriend, 36-year-old Jeremy Gift, in a room at the Relax Inn in Bowling Green.

Houck then abducted his estranged wife from the room, authorities said.

Caroline County sheriff's deputies responding to the shooting saw a Mercury Mountaineer SUV fleeing from the scene. Along with Virginia State Police officers, they chased the SUV through Bowling Green and then onto I-95 in Spotsylvania.

Authorities positioned themselves around the SUV, forcing it to slow down. Shortly before 8:40 a.m., around the 124-mile marker, the SUV rammed a police cruiser.

Moments later, Houck shot himself inside the vehicle, Virginia State Police said. He died at the scene.

Houck's estranged wife was in the SUV and wasn't injured.

Houck's body has been transported to the medical examiner's office in Richmond for an autopsy. The case remains under investigation, Virginia State Police said.

Drivers on northbound I-95 were diverted from the interstate at exit 118 in the aftermath of the incident. The roadway reopened around 12:30 p.m.

Court records show Houck had an extensive criminal record in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania.
