Former Pediatrician Leslie Altstatt Charged With Child Sex Abuse

A former pediatrician has been arrested on multiple charges of child abuse and sex offenses during a period spanning more than 30 years.

Montgomery County Police say they were approached by three women last February, alleging they had been sexually abused by Leslie Altstatt. All three are related to Altstatt.

Altstatt, now 83, worked as a pediatrician and researcher at the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Georgia Avenue in northwest D.C. from the mid-1960s through the early 1980s.

One of the victims says Altstatt's abuse started when she was 6 years old until she was 15. She told police she was abused hundreds of times.

Altstatt's lawyer Richard Finci told News4 his client had never even worked as a pediatrician.

"He told me that he was never in a pediatric position at Walter Reed Hospital. He was a medical researcher," Finci said.

Altstatt, a resident of Silver Spring, was arrested last week on five counts of sex offenses, child abuse and six counts of committing an unnatural and perverted sex practice.

"He's a wonderful man," his wife, Lori Altstatt, told News4's Shomari Stone.

Altstatt has been released from prison on bond.

Because of his role as a pediatrician, police fear Altstatt may have abused other victims.
