Ex-DC HR Head Stands by Testimony

ASSOCIATED PRESS

The former head of human resources for the District of Columbia is standing by her testimony that she did not initiate a hiring that led to accusations of nepotism by Mayor Vincent Gray.

Judy Banks testified Friday before a D.C. Council committee that's looking into Gray's hiring practices.

She maintains that Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe approached her about hiring Brandon Webb, the son of another Cabinet head in Gray's administration. Ellerbe, Brandon Webb and his mother have all testified that the fire chief did not know Webb until after he was placed in the fire department by Banks.

The Council is trying to determine who is at fault for questionable hires by the Gray administration, although it has little power to take action against anyone found to have committed wrongdoing.
