Former Capitol Hill Staffer Indicted on Wire Fraud Charges

A federal grand jury has indicted a former Capitol Hill staffer on wire fraud charges, saying he used his status as a Senate aide to bilk women out of $500,000.

Robert Lee Foster, 65, formerly of Falls Church, was indicted Thursday on nine wire fraud counts and will be arraigned June 5.

According to the indictment, Foster worked on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation from 1969 until his retirement in 2010. Prosecutors say he used his status as a Senate staffer to help convince three women, ranging in age from 54 to 75, to give him $500,000 under false pretenses over the last seven years.

Foster's lawyer, Jonathan Simms, said Thursday that Foster is innocent and that he did not misuse his Senate employment.
