There may be a check with your name on it, just waiting to be claimed.

What could the cash be from? Unclaimed money and property, refund checks that weren't cashed, money from bank accounts that weren't closed out properly and items in abandoned safety deposit boxes.

There are tens of thousands of people in the D.C. region who are owed cash, jewlery or other property and have absolutely no idea.

Maryland, for example, has $794 million in unclaimed property, and state officials are looking for the rightful owners.

Notices to potential recipients have been printed and are ready to go out. A complete list of names associated with this year's 54,000 new accounts will be published in newspapers in a few weeks, but they are already online.
