First Launch of Unmanned Drone From Aircraft Carrier

The U.S. Navy launched an unmanned drone the size of a fighter jet off of an aircraft carrier for the first time Tuesday.

The Navy catapulted an X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System off the USS George H.W. Bush off the coast of Virginia at 11:18 a.m. It landed at Naval Air Station Patuxent River at 12:24 p.m.

In a few weeks, the Navy will attempt to land the drone on a carrier.

In December, the Navy tested aboard USS Harry Truman to see how well the drone could taxi and maneuver on the flight deck, WAVY-TV reported.
