WASHINGTON -- Students from Bancroft and Kimball elementary schools went to work in the White House garden Thursday to help the first lady with the autumn harvest.
Michelle Obama boasted about the huge sweet potatoes the garden yielded. Students also picked carrots, broccoli and other vegetables.
Bancroft students helped Obama prepare the garden and plant in March. The first lady is using it to raise awareness about healthy eating the great flavor of fresh food.
Food from the garden has been prepared at the White House, but Thursday's harvest was donated to Miriam's Kitchen, which prepares healthy meals for homeless men and women in D.C.
Next up for the garden: Winter greens like kale and spinach. Mmmm, kale.
