Fire Destroys Allen Theater Building

More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze

A three-alarm fire destroyed a historic building that once was home to the Allen Theater.

More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze in Takoma Park. It broke out at about 2:30 a.m. at 6822 New Hampshire Avenue, just south of Montgomery County's Langley Park Shopping Center.

There were reports of walls collapsing and a possible minor injury to a firefighter.

The damage to the Allen Theater was so extensive that it might be impossible for investigators to determine what caused the fire, Scott Graham, assistant chief of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, told the Washington Post.

From 1951 to 1990, the building housed the Allen Theater and was since converted into a shoe and clothing store.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
