The D.C. taxi fuel surcharge is over.

The $1 surcharge per trip in a D.C. taxi due to high gasoline prices is no more.

The D.C. Taxi Cab Commission rescinded the $1 fee Tuesday in what it called an emergency action.  The fee officially goes away at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.

Commission Chairman Leon Swain Jr. said taxi cabs are required to remove current gas surcharge stickers and post a notice in their cabs.

Many riders had complained about the surcharge recently as gas prices continued to drop across the country.

  • Jim Wednesday, Dec 3 at 4:11 PM FLAG COMMENT I have yet to ride in a DC cab where the driver did not try to scam me. They take longer routes than necessary, drive slower than required, and are VERY selective about who they are willing to pick up or where they are willing to go. Having grown up with the zone system, I didn't think it could get any worse. I was wrong.
  • Horatio Wednesday, Dec 3 at 2:42 PM FLAG COMMENT In any profession or business you'll find dishonest, unscrupolous people including the DC Cab Drivers. Not all cab drivers are dishonest. There are drivers who go out of there way to make your trip a pleasant experience. Occasionally I use cabs to get around the city and I am yet to encounter a rude or dishonest driver. To become an efficient cab driver in the Distict or any city is an on the job training experience. Unless a ... MORE >
