At least three students have been taken to Howard University Hospital after a series of fights broke out at Cardozo High School Tuesday afternoon.

Police went to the scene to stop the fighting and evacuated part of the school.

One of the injured students, a 17-year-old boy, was unconscious with serious injuries and two girls suffered from minor injuries, according to the D.C. Fire Department.

The fights mainly involved girls and began shortly after noon. It started with one brawl that led to at least five smaller fights. They apparently are related to a hair-pulling incident Monday.

"Evidently there was an incident that occurred yesterday between some of the young ladies, and it just spilled over into school today," said D.C. Police Cmdr. Brian Jordan. "They confronted each other in the school. A fight occurred."

Several students have been questioned, and 16 were arrested. No faculty or staff were injured.

All after school activities were canceled, including the boys basketball game.
