Fighting Potholes with Your Phone

Drivers in our area are used to dodging traffic. But the winter weather brings a whole new challenge on area roadways…potholes. And if you have ever hit one, you know they cannot only be jarring, but damaging.

Now there is a way to let road crews know about new holes on the highway, right from your smartphone. Dr. Minh Tran, a dentist in Springfield, Va., has developed an app called Pothole Alert. The free app is designed to deliver your phone’s GPS coordinates to the local transportation department so they can find the bumps in the road.

Already, 20 states get the pothole location information from drivers because of the app. Dr. Tran has also developed an app that helps travelers share a taxi when they arrive at the airport.
