WASHINGTON -- D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty said the city won't repeat mistakes with the summer jobs that cost the city millions more than expected.
Hundreds of D.C. juveniles signed up for the annual program at the Washington Convention Center Wednesday, the first day of a two-day expo. The city expects almost 20,000 participants this year, in part because of the bad economy.
Last summer's program was a disaster, with a $20 million cost overrun, failure to pay some workers and payment to some who weren't working.
To avoid problems, registration began early this year, and applicants must prove they live in D.C.
This year's program has a focus on green jobs. It runs from mid-June until mid-August and participants will receive $7 to $7.50 per hour.
The next NBC Washington PNC Bank Community Shred is scheduled for June 16, 2012.
