A motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a tractor-trailer Tuesday morning, leading police to close Interstate 95 northbound for several hours during the crash investigation.

Timothy Halpin, 68, of Dumfries, Va., died after he apparently lost control of the motorcycle he was riding in the left lane about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday just before the Fairfax County Parkway, Virginia State Police said. As the motorcycle slid on to the left shoulder, Halpin slid into the center lane. He was then struck by the tractor trailer, which didn't stop, according to state police.

Halpin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses were not able to provide a description of the tractor-trailer, investigators said. Anyone with information is encouraged to call state police.

It was raining at the time of the crash, state police said. Alcohol was not a factor.

The backup on the busy highway quickly grew to as much as nine miles, as police stopped traffic ahead of exit 163, News4's Tony Tull reported.

The road was reopened before 7 a.m. The HOV lanes are open.
