Fatal Crash on Dulles Access Road

Airport-bound lanes closed in both directions

One person was killed in a car accident on the Dulles Access Road early Friday.

The crash involving a Sun Cab and a Kia minivan occurred about 7 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the Dulles Access Road, near the Beltway.

A passenger in the cab, 36-year-old Daniel Hartung, of South Jordan, Utah, died at the scene. The drivers of the cab and the minivan were hospitalized in serious condition.

Although initial reports indicated it was a single-car accident, a witness told NBC Washington that three cars were involved in the crash. The man who was in the vehicle pictured above "appeared to only have minor injuries," he said in an email to NBC Washington.

The westbound lanes of the Dulles Access Road -- that's the airport-only route -- were closed for almost five hours due to the investigation. The westbound and eastbound lanes of the Dulles Toll Road remained open to traffic.
