  • The money will go toward funding maintenance on the Dulles Toll Road as well as construction of the extension of Metro's Silver Line.

A toll increase went into effect Tuesday for drivers on the Dulles Toll Road in Northern Virginia.

Drivers are now paying 75 cents more at the main toll plaza and 50 cents more on the ramps, a total increase of $2.50 each day for a round trip.

The money will go toward funding maintenance on the Dulles Toll Road as well as construction of the extension of Metro's Silver Line past Dulles International Airport.

The toll hike has been controversial, with many drivers saying they don't think it's fair that they have to help fund the Silver Line. Some people held a protest recently, saying they think airlines should have to shoulder some of the burden.

Tolls were last raised in 2014, and officials say they hope they won't have to raise them again until at least 2023.
