Family Says Caregivers Abandoned Elderly Father in Florida

A local woman says caregivers for her elderly father left him in Florida ahead of Hurricane Irma.

A local woman says her 93-year-old father was abandoned in the wake of Hurricane Irma by his three caretakers.

Cheryl Marquis spent all day worrying about her father after his caregivers evacuated, leaving him alone in his southwest Florida home.

“We’ve had a stressful day,” Marquis told NBC4. “We have a large family, and all of the brothers and sisters were in touch today to decide how to evacuate my dad.”

The family ultimately decided that one sister would fly into Ft. Myers, drive to Tampa and help her dad board a plane to Dallas, Texas. There, he will be safe with Marquis' brother.

"He'll be safe with my brother's family in Dallas," Marquis said.

More people are expected to fly into Reagan National Airport to escape the Category 4 storm.
