Family Collects More Than 1,600 Pairs of Socks for DC's Homeless

The Virginia family calls the effort The Warm Piggies Project

Black and white trash bags stuffed to the brim with socks filled a room inside a D.C. shelter Sunday, thanks to a local family who made it their holiday mission.

Julie Spurlin and her two boys, 13-year-old Jack and 9-year-old Ben, dropped off the socks at Central Union Mission in Northwest.

The Spurlins, from Herndon, Virginia, have collected more than 1,600 pairs of new and used socks since Thanksgiving. It's what the family calls the Warm Piggies Project.

"Driving through we saw a lot of people who might need them and it... it's kind of touching," Jack Spurlin said.

With the help of friends, family -- and social media -- the Spurlins collected the socks in their neighborhoods.

"I felt good to help the community out," Ben Spurlin said.

A second load of socks went to Missionaries of Charity in D.C.

Julie Spurlin said she hopes her family will inspire other families to give back.

"Whether it's socks or blankets or toiletries...to make sure that you are finding a way to give back with your family as well," she said.
