Fallen Tree Tears Through Fairfax Home

Woman 'blessed' to be alive after being pinned in her bed

A Fairfax woman has been hospitalized after a large tree from her backyard came crashing through the roof of her bedroom early Sunday morning, pinning her in her bed as she slept.

It happened at 1:25 a.m. Sunday at 5112 Lavery Court in the Braddock section of Fairfax County.

When firefighters got there, they found the tree--which measured around 4 feet in diameter--had impacted the woman's bed in to the floor. Firefighters had to stabilize the tree and make sure it didn't do more injury to the woman before they were able to get her out.

A spokesman for the Fairfax County Fire Department said that firefighters needed an hour and twenty minutes to extricate the woman, who was not identified. She was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The fire department spokesman told News4 that the woman's only complaint was loss of feeling to her legs. He described her as "blessed" to be alive.

Building inspectors have deemed the house to be uninhabitable.
