School district employees in Fairfax have gone two years without a pay raise.

This year, the district is receiving virtually the same amount of money from the county as it did last year, despite asking county supervisors for $48 million more.

School board chair Kathy Smith said the flat funding makes a pay increase more of a challenge, but hasn't affected the board's resolve.

"We are committed to being able to provide a step increase and a cost of living increase," Smith said. "I don't know if we'll get to the 2 percent that we wanted, but we are committed to providing a pay increase for our employees."

At Monday's work session, school board members will also discuss how the district will pay for and implement district-wide, full-day kindergarten.

Administrators have said the longer kindergarten will cost about $8 million -- board members must decide whether to implement it all at once or phase it in over a two-year period.
