Fairfax County Makes Garza Hiring Official

Lubbock Superintendent unanimous pick to head County schools

A veteran educator from Texas has been confirmed as the new superintendent of Fairfax County's highly regarded public school system.

The county school board voted unanimously Thursday to approve the hiring of Karen Garza.

Garza is superintendent of the Lubbock Independent School District in west Texas. She starts in Fairfax County on July 1.

Garza has also held administrative positions in Corpus Christi, Texas, and in Houston. She has a doctorate in education and previously worked as an elementary classroom teacher.

She will succeed Jack Dale, who's led Virginia's largest public school system for nine years.

Garza says in a statement that she's humbled by the "wonderful opportunity.''
