A man who worked for 15 years as a janitor at FBI headquarters was shot and killed Thursday afternoon after he left his mother's apartment.
Gabriel Carlos Turner, 46, was headed to a bus stop to commute to work when he was shot about 12 p.m. on the 2600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, D.C. police and his mother said. Turner was rushed to a hospital, where he died.
"I don't know why nobody had to kill him. He didn't bother nobody," Ellen Turner said hours after her son was killed just steps from her home.
Turner ate breakfast with his mother twice a week and was headed to work at the J. Edgar Hoover Building downtown when he was hit, his mother said.
He was a valued worker, said the nonprofit Melwood, which employs people with disabilities.
"He was a dedicated employee and he got along with everyone," a spokeswoman for the group said. "We send our sincere condolences to his family."
Witnesses said they heard at least six shots before Turner was found wounded. Two of the bullets whizzed across Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and into a neighbor's apartment, right where she often sits on her bed. She was uninjured and said she felt "lucky."

No information on a suspect or motive was released immediately.
Ellen Turner, who has lived in her apartment more than 50 years, had four sons. Her other three sons died of natural causes before Gabriel was killed Thursday.
"All my sons gone," she said. "I can't take no more."
