Expect Weekend Metro Delays for Next 12 Months

Metro has released a schedule for its track maintenance projects over the next 12 months which calls for widespread delays and closures.

Metro is replacing nearly all of its tens of thousands of track circuits and switches. To do that, it has to shut down entire sections of its subway system for days at a time.

Metro plans to do that during weekends, when ridership is usually at its lowest. And over the next year, there will be few weekends without a delay or a closure somewhere.

For example, on the weekend of Aug. 20-21, every station on the Red Line north of Fort Totten will be completely shut down. And starting Oct. 8, at least two stations will be closed every weekend for seven consecutive weekends.

Metro says it will provide extra bus service whenever and where ever it closes a station.
