Exchange Student Charged With Sex Abuse in Maryland

Alleged abuse took place in 2011

An exchange student from Colombia has been charged with child sex abuse of a 9-year-old girl.

Court documents filed in Frederick County District Court show that 19-year-old Robert Alex Saldarriaga-Yepes, who currently resides in New Market, has been charged with sex abuse of a minor, second-degree child abuse, and other sex offenses. He is being held at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center on $65,000 bail.

The Frederick News-Post reports that documents indicate the girl and her mother reported the alleged abuse to the private school she and Saldarriaga-Yepes attend on Wednesday. The paper reported that an investigator from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office and a Child Protective Servies agent interviewed the girl at the school before the investigator interviewed Saldarriaga-Yepes, who admitted to inappropriately touching the girl.

Saldarriaga-Yepes is accused of abusing the girl several times between November 2011 and December 2011. It is not known how long he had been an exchange student.
