Ex-VRE Manager Pleads to Taking $200,000 in Bribes

A former manager at Virginia Railway Express has pleaded guilty to taking at least $200,000 in bribes from a contractor who did maintenance work for the commuter rail.

Kevin Jannell, 49, of Fredericksburg, pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court in Alexandria to a single count of bribery. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

Jannell, a former facilities manager for VRE, admitted taking a monthly bribe of up to $4,000 from a subcontractor that did maintenance work in return for giving the contractor favorable evaluations that allowed him to keep the contract.

Court papers do not identify the company that paid the bribe.

The scheme ran for nearly a decade, from 2003 through this March. Court records indicate the total amount Jannell received was between $200,000 and $400,000.
