People watch a fireworks display from the Lincoln Memorial during an Independence Day celebration on the National Mall. As crowded as the mall was, even more are expected for President-elect Barack Obama's swearing in ceremony.

Barack Obama's inaugural committee said that, in a change from tradition, the entire length of the National Mall will be open to the public during his inauguration.

Jumbotron television screens will be set up to help visitors experience the historic nomination.

The announcement came Thursday from the committee, which has pledged to make Obama's inauguration "the most open and accessible in history."

People who can't get the 240,000 tickets to the swearing in on the Capitol grounds can fill the mall. In the past, parts of the mall have been closed off as a parade staging area.  Inaugural parade participants will be announced next week.

The Park Service said it's expecting at least 1 million people for the inaugural, and the city has put the number as high as 5 million.

Those who watch the swearing-in on the Mall will be able to watch and listen to the ceremony on large screens.

"This will be an Inauguration for all Americans," said District Mayor Adrian Fenty in a press release. "And so we are dedicated to opening it up so that people from across the country can gather together in America's front yard. We remain hard at work to ensure the day's festivities are safe and accessible for visitors, residents, and businesses alike."

  • Carla Friday, Dec 5 at 9:34 AM FLAG COMMENT Although this will be a memorial event has anyone considered who will be paying the tab for the ruined grounds of the mall when this is over?? I am also worried about people not used to our weather getting ill and not being able to get assistance. I hope that the DC and Federal Government has plenty of people checking the bags, etc. of those attending so that some Arian nuts do not try to shoot those on the Mall. There is m ... MORE >
  • Pachacutec Friday, Dec 5 at 7:52 AM FLAG COMMENT "Ron," you're correct that people should think about what they're getting into before going to the Inauguration. You mentioned portable toilets; yes, it'll be a task to find them and, unless you have a reserved seat in the swearing-in area or on a parade bleacher, it's guaranteed you won't be able to get back to where you were standing afterwards. And it won't just be standing for the Inauguration, either; I'm hearing that M ... MORE >
  • Ron Thursday, Dec 4 at 11:22 PM FLAG COMMENT Should be a great day for the young and active person...but unless you are used to standing in an area for at least 5hrs before the ceremony then I would advise anyone to stay at home....it will be cold for sure...getting to a porta-toilet might be a task and staying warm will be impossible for those manyhours....and if one gets sick how can emergency responders get to you if you are thickinto the crowd??? Think people before ... MORE >
  • katgirl Thursday, Dec 4 at 2:32 PM FLAG COMMENT I can't even imagine the crowds they are talking about. The metro on the day of the Pope's visit (and that was only 1/100 of what they are predicting) was bad enough for me.
