Emergency Crews Practice Metro Train Evacuation Scenario

Metro and area emergency crews will be responding to the Greenbelt Station Sunday morning in a test of evacuating a disabled train outside the station.

Metro Transit Police and the Prince Georges County Fire/EMS Department will conduct a full-scale emergency response drill at Greenbelt Station from 8 a.m. until approximately 1 p.m.

During the exercise, emergency responders will simulate the evacuation of passengers from a Green Line train that is disabled on the tracks outside of Greenbelt. Prince George’s County Police, Greenbelt Police and the American Red Cross also will participate in the exercise.

Greenbelt Station will remain open to customers during the exercise. However, riders will notice a large presence of emergency responders and equipment. Customers traveling to or from Greenbelt Station on Sunday morning should follow directional signage.

The drill will test the response and incident coordination of fire and emergency medical services personnel, working cooperatively with Metro operations, transit police and support personnel.

The exercise is the first in a series of quarterly full-scale drills scheduled to improve responder training in the wake of the January L’Enfant Plaza smoke incident. Subsequent exercises this year will take place in the District of Columbia and Virginia.
