Electrical Problem Likely Cause of Metro Station Smoke

Federal Center station reopens

The Federal Center Metrorail Station had reopened by 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after smoke caused the evacuation for about an hour.

An electrical problem with or near a pylon appears to be the cause of the smoke, according to Metro. Lighting on the pylon was turned off.

The station was temporarily closed and evacuated at 1:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported

Trains passed through the station during the closure but did not stop, Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel said. Shuttle buses transported customers between the L'Enfant Plaza and Capitol South stops.
