The Calvert County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal two-car accident that took place Saturday afternoon.

Investigators say that Shirley Thompson, 74, of Chesapeake Beach, was driving north on Route 261 when his car crossed over the double yellow center line and collided head-on with a Honda Pilot driven by 65-year-old Stephen Claggett, also of Chesapeake Beach.

Clagget had to be extracted from the vehicle and was taken to Prince George's County Trauma Center. His injuries are described as serious, though his official condition is not yet known. Thompson was taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

What caused Thompson to cross over the center line and collide with Clagget's car is not known. Anyone with information is asked to call the Calvert County Sheriff's Office at (410) 535-2800.
