Students from George Washington University are collecting old cell phones and portable electronics this morning at several Metro stations around the region.
The collection is an effort to raise funds for health projects designed for mothers and children in South Asia and Africa.
The students are asking Metro riders to bring their old mobile devices and small electronics to 15 Metro stations, including Gallery Place, Franconia-Springfield, Metro Center, New Carrolton and Union Station.
Students will be taking donations until 9:30 a.m.
Students also will be promoting a program called Text4Baby that provides health information through text messages for pregnant women and new mothers in the District.
Stations where the collection is happening are:
Capital South, Dupont Circle, Farragut North, Farragut West, Federal Triangle, Foggy Bottom, Franconia-Springfield, Gallery Place Chinatown, L'Enfant Plaza, McPherson Square, Metro Center, New Carrollton, Pentagon City, Rosslyn, Union Station
