Driver-in-Training Crashes Into Apartment Building

LANHAM, Md. -- A student driver and driving instructor are facing charges after crashing through an apartment window and wall Monday morning, injuring an occupant.

Prince George's County Fire and EMS went to the Carrollton East Apartment Complex at 9700 Good Luck Road in Lanham at 10:05 a.m. to find a minivan halfway into a ground-level apartment bedroom, officials said.

The man learning to drive and his friend acting as instructor were not injured, but a man sitting on a chair inside the bedroom was struck by flying bricks and suffered a leg injury, according to the fire department. He was taken to an area hospital from which he was expected to be released later Monday.

Witnesses told authorities that the two people in the minivan were parked and discussing driving procedures. When the car was put in drive, it accelerated across the 25 yards to the building.

A technical rescue team assisted in getting the minivan out of the bedroom and shoring the hole the vehicle left.
