Driver in Fatal Bicycle Crash Charged With Moving Violations

The driver of a truck that fatally struck a bicyclist in Gaithersburg, Maryland, has been charged with moving violations.

The accident occurred on the morning of Nov. 24 when the bicyclist collided with a Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) truck, police said. Police at the time said the truck was attempting to turn left on a green light into a shopping center in the 12100 block of Darnestown Road.

The bicyclist, 60-year-old Andrew Gerard Malizio of Gaithersburg, died at the scene.

Last week police charged the driver of the truck with failure to yield to oncoming traffic on a left turn and negligent driving, according to a police statement.

At least three bicyclists died in crashes in Montgomery County since 2007, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
