UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -- A truck driver was seriously injured after his tractor-trailer struck a guardrail in Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County authorities said.

The driver was heading northbound on Route 301 Tuesday morning when he lost control of the tractor-trailer and went over the shoulder embankment, fire department spokesman Mark Brady said. The cab hung over a steep embankment while trees supported the vehicle.

Two saddle tanks burst, spilling 150 gallons of diesel fuel, which covered the driver, Brady said. Authorities shut down northbound lanes of Route 301 to clean up the spill.

The driver was taken to an area hospital. The man's injuries are serious but not life-threatening, Brady said.

The tractor-trailer was hauling an empty 8,000-gallon diesel fuel tanker.
