Dominion Virginia Power says it's asking state regulators to increase what the utility charges customers to recover its fuel costs due to extremely cold weather this winter.
The Richmond-based energy provider on Friday asked the State Corporation Commission to increase the fuel rate starting July 1.
If approved, the change would raise the average monthly bill of a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours by $4.46.
Virginia law allows Dominion to bill its customers for the company's cost of the natural gas, coal, uranium and biomass used to generate electricity and the power the utility company buys.
The company also is asking to increase its transmission rate by $1.91 a month for a typical residential customer beginning in September.
Dominion has about 2.3 million customers in Virginia.
