Dog to be Destroyed for Attack on Show Animals

Owner denies her pet is responsible for attack

Animal control authorities ordered the destruction of a pit bull they think is responsible for the deaths of show animals on a Maryland farm.

Investigators say the dog, owned by Kayla Murphy of Washington County, Maryland, attacked several sheep on a farm in Funkstown on Wednesday.

Six sheep died in the attack, and eight others had to be destroyed later because of the severity of their wounds.

Two dogs were involved in the attack; one was shot and killed at the scene.

Investigators traced the other dog a nearby home.

Sheep owner Joseph Frey says the surviving animals can't be shown in competition.  He estimates his losses at more than $15,000.

Murphy denies that her pet was involved in the attack, but has been cited for letting her dogs run loose.  Murphy can appeal the animal control board decision to circuit court.
