Two suspects are wanted for beating a 69-year-old dog walker with a pipe in broad daylight during an attempted carjacking in Northwest D.C., police say.
The woman was dropping off a dog named Luchu in the 1400 block of Euclid Street NW Thursday afternoon when two men tried to steal her car. Another dog was also in the car.
"She got out and they confronted her and told her to give [them] the car and she refused because the dogs were in the car and then they beat her," said Caesar Layton, Luchu's owner.
One of the suspects assaulted her with a piece of pipe while the other got into the car.
The victim's daughter said the pipe left deep gashes in her head. She remains in the hospital with severe head trauma.
"I don't know. These people are just, I guess, sick in the head. Because how you can beat the person that cannot defend theirselves?" the victim's daughter said. News4 is not identifying the daughter in order to protect the victim's identity.
The suspects couldn't get the car to start so they ran off with the victim's purse.

Layton says a good Samaritan intervened and helped get the dogs back to their owners.
D.C. police released surveillance camera footage and images of two persons of interest wanted in connection with the attack.
Layton says the victim has walked Luchu for years and she's like part of the family.
"She's really important to us so, I mean, just completely unnecessary. She's just the sweetest most gentle person," Layton said.
"She's a very positive person, a very outgoing person and I mean, wow. I cannot believe this happened on this day," the victim's daughter says.
She says her mom has a long recovery ahead.
